Our Story
In just over one month, more than 5,000 households applied for aid—the highest number of applications we’ve ever received, in the shortest time period, since our founding in 1977. More than half of the people who reached out to us were nearly or completely out of fuel or experiencing a shutoff when they submitted their application for energy assistance. That means empty tanks, freezing homes, and families in crisis.
Every one of those numbers is a story. A parent doing everything they can to keep their kids warm. A senior choosing between heat or this month’s medications. A veteran with an empty fridge and an apartment growing colder by the hour. The need in our community is not only ongoing—it's been growing for years.
Currently, one in four Connecticut households are considered energy burdened, meaning they are struggling to afford their utilities and are at risk for disconnection.
