Our Story

Our History

On April 2nd, 2002, the Town of Washington lost two native sons. Brothers Brian and Christopher Swanson were involved in a tragic car accident that claimed both of their lives. Brian was 21 and Chris was just 18. The boys’ parents, Al and Lynda, chose to focus their grief in a way that would keep the boys’ memory alive while making a positive and ongoing contribution to the families and children of the community they themselves were born and raised in.

With a core group of family and friends, the idea for an annual charity softball tournament was conceived. A tournament that would bring together families from far and wide for a weekend of games, food, and fun for all ages.

Our Goal

“Our goal is simple; encourage parents to start an education fund for their children, educate families on the importance of giving back to their community, and reach out to help those in need.” - Al & Lynda Swanson

Our Numbers

  • With the support of the community, the tournament has been held every year for the past 23 years.

  • At the tournament each year, two junior scholarships of $1,000 are awarded. These scholarships help families begin to save for their younger children’s future educational needs.

  • To date, the Swanson Family Foundation has contributed more than $240,000 to the Shepaug Valley Scholarship Fund, which allows two scholarships to be awarded annually to students applying to a trade school.
