Swanson Family Foundation
Our Story
Our History
On April 2nd, 2002, the Town of Washington lost two native sons. Brothers Brian and Christopher Swanson were involved in a tragic car accident that claimed both of their lives. Brian was 21 and Chris was just 18. The boys’ parents, Al and Lynda, chose to focus their grief in a way that would keep the boys’ memory alive while making a positive and ongoing contribution to the families and children of the community they themselves were born and raised in.
With a core group of family and friends, the idea for an annual charity softball tournament was conceived. A tournament that would bring together families from far and wide for a weekend of games, food, and fun for all ages.
Our Goal
“Our goal is simple; encourage parents to start an education fund for their children, educate families on the importance of giving back to their community, and reach out to help those in need.” - Al & Lynda Swanson
Our Numbers
With the support of the community, the tournament has been held every year for the past 23 years.
At the tournament each year, two junior scholarships of $1,000 are awarded. These scholarships help families begin to save for their younger children’s future educational needs.
To date, the Swanson Family Foundation has contributed more than $240,000 to the Shepaug Valley Scholarship Fund, which allows two scholarships to be awarded annually to students applying to a trade school.
